Best builders' merchant TRAINING initiative of the year

Young Guns is the name of the scheme established by UGS, open to all trainees. Through it, they receive a thorough induction and, says the company, high quality training. One example is yard operatives. They receive training in manual handling, forklift driving, health and safety, customer service, HGV driving courses and Builders' Merchants Federation module training - leading to NVQ qualifications. They also receive all the product training offered by suppliers. Courses are run once a year. Young Guns, says UGS, "has improved communication between all branches and co-operation in the company is now excellent." From this course, UGS has developed several managers - all in their mid-to-late 20s.

The company has also recently been awarded the Investor in People standard and passed at the first time of asking.
